BYD Balancers: Are they really perfect?

BYD Blade Battery. Source: BYD LFP or LifePo4 batteries are gaining alot of momentum in recent times due to the robustness of its chemistry. This chemistry is capable of sustaining extreme temperatures + other climatic conditions without having much impact on its health. The only thing that can affect LFP battery is the imbalance which exists in the battery pack. What is Imbalance in LifePo4 batteries? Battery pack of any electric car is made up of multiple cells. All these cells are supposed to perform together at equal potential for EV to run smoothly. When one or more cells are not at same SOC (State of Charge) as other cells then it is termed as an imbalanced battery pack. This can cause the cells of the battery pack to degrade non-uniformly, causing the rapid reduction of SOH (state of health) of the whole battery pack. Factors affecting battery to get imbalance 1. Fast charging the battery frequently. 2. Not performing 100% charge regularly on a level 2 charger. Normally car manu...

Why MG and BYD cars battery SOH is dropping faster?

Source: BYD We all know that all the BYD cars are equipped with LFP batteries nowadays. These battery chemistry has become quite popular in today's time due to its evident advantages over NMC battery cells. We can see lots of other manufacturer's also using lfp battery chemistry nowadays for their Electric vehicles.  LFP batteries are required to have constantly balanced cells at all times. This will help the battery pack to perform at their optimum levels at all times. For this, companies suggests to charge the car all the way up to 100% on regular basis. Doing this will ensure that the battery of your car is at optimum top balanced level at all times. What is happening with MG and BYD Batteries? As we all know, in case of LFP batteries it is very difficult to judge the actual SOC of the battery unless it is charged upto 100% on dropped below 10%, So BMS calculates the SOC based on columb count method. Now when the battery pack has degraded or is imbalanced, it is likely that ...

Understanding Absorption Time in LFP batteries

Source: Off Grid Garrage Understanding LFP charging is not as simple as other battery chemistries. This is because of their weird behavior during the charging phase. There are several misconceptions floating around about charging behavior of LFP batteries. All of them are not true, while some of them are true but not for the reason they are mentioning, while some reasons are actually true too. Misconceptions 1. Charging 10 to 100% does better cell balancing than 50 to 100%: This concept holds 100% true, if your battery is NMC battery. If its LFP battery then its not true. As per experiments conducted by several people this is not proving to be true. But doing 10% to 100% is actually good for LFP battery but not for cell balancing but for battery longevity. To understand this one guy did experiment on group of lfp cells connected together. these were his findings. If you want all cells to be balanced to 3.4V, then keep the balancing start voltage to 3.4V only. Keeping balancing start vo...

Shall I Buy Induction Stove?

Source: Flipkart Lots of people are still skeptical about the likely future held by Induction stoves. First lets discuss some of the likely benefits you can have by switching to induction stove over LPG or Natural Gas. Pros of Induction Stove 1. Pocket Friendly: When you are using induction stove over conventional ones, your monthly expenses would be greatly reduced. Hence, induction stove will prove to be pocket friendly to you. 2. Better Cooking: Induction stoves cooks food uniformly as the electromagnetic radiation generates heat uniformly in the food. Uniform cooking helps in better heating of the food thereby preparing the food of more better quality and taste. 3. Increased cooking speed: Induction stove will not only provide better cooking quality but will also increase cooking speed. Energy lost will be minimal and hence one can achieve rapid cooking speed for their daily needs without compromising over cooking quality. 4. No burnt stuff: While doing cooking from induction...

Why some of the BMS are failing in case of LFP batteries? And how to avoid them?

We must have heard in recent times that few of the LFP BMS are failing in recent times. Main reason for that will be discussed over here based on my studies and understanding. Do keep in mind that these studies can likely have errors as I am still studying about functioning of LFP batteries. To start our understanding we will be starting with the concept of memory effect. Memory Effect Word of Caution: Don’t google definition of memory effect. That definition doesn’t apply to LFP batteries. Memory effect observed in LFP batteries is completely different. Source: Indiamart Memory effect is influenced by the point of starting and stopping the charging cycle. Some papers are showing that starting point will be showing memory effect point while some are showing that even end point will also showcase memory effect. I know this will be little confusing for you as you are not aware about the exact functioning of memory effect in LFP yet. So lets first understand that. Lets conside...

Functioning of LFP Battery Chemistry: EV's Perspective

This post will constantly be updated with latest studies which I do regarding LiFePo4 batteries and how they perform under various conditions. So stay tuned. EVs have become quite popular with the usage of NMC battery chemistry. NMC batteries became popular due to the lower amount of battery complexity, which led to a much easier BMS design for those companies. But the prime reason EVs didn't become mainstream was because of the battery longevity. We all know NMC batteries need to be operated between 20 to 80% SoC to maintain its battery health for a long time. While it's not the same case with LFP batteries. Now in this article, we will be discussing in depth about functioning of LFP batteries. Introduction LFP batteries are also one kind of Lithium-ion batteries. Its full form is referred to as Lithium Iron Phosphate. It was mainly originated from EVs manufactured in China. It gained popularity due to its capacity to withstand extreme climatic conditions and also high c...

Choosing the right solar rooftop for your needs

We see a lots of people installing solar rooftops in today’s time. But still lots of people are still skeptical about going for solar rooftop. The main reason for that is the high initial cost, which is scarring them away from the great benefits which solar energy has to offer. People who have gone for solar rooftop are definitely witnessing their benefits and are also encouraging other people to opt for it. We will be sharing here some of the basic things which one needs to be aware of while choosing the right solar rooftop for their needs. Residential Solar Panels: An introduction Residential solar panels are either monocrystalline, polycrystalline or thin film panels. All of them has their own pros, cons and efficiency rates. In terms of suitability, monocrystalline and polycrystalline panels are most suitable for residential application because of their higher efficiency, longer life, etc. Choosing the right solar panel for your need Lots of people has this common q...
